Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. In her early years, Ruth Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away and forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become cleaner or waitress in order for them to remain alive. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. But she only stayed in school for two years before taking a break to pursue her acting career. Her chosen path proved to be strewn with obstacles such as in New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a magazine about crime However, the stage was not a match for her. When she was employed as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she resigned and went back to Boston. She worked as an usherette in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. She completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
