Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father's death in the role of a carnival barker as a little girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth attended school, and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. She quit the school she was attending just two years later in order to pursue a career as an actor. This path was fraught with difficulties. When she was offered a job in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to get opportunities for stage. After working as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. It was there that she made a buck working as an usherette during the day, and at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. In addition, she was a drama student and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
