Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. The actress was the first child born to Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a teenager when her father who worked as the carnival barker, passed away. The mother of the family had to take on jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She went to school in Boston. However, she was only in school for two years before going on to pursue an acting career. It was not without problems. After landing a gig as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine she had a difficult time trying to get work on stage. After that, she was the hat checker in the nightclub before calling it quits and returning to Boston. It was there that she was able to earn a living as an usherette by day, and at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
