Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a teenager when her father who worked as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to perform tasks like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth attended school, and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. However, she left school in the span of two years of school to explore a career in acting. The path she chose was filled with difficulties. After obtaining a position in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she found it difficult to get jobs for stage. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. In Boston, she earned a living working as an usherette during the in the daytime, while at night she performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. The study of drama helped her to graduate in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
