Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Ruth was a small toddler when her father who worked as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts in which she went to school. The school she attended after only two years to pursue a career as an actor. Her chosen path proved to be strewn with obstacles such as in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills for a crime magazine, but theatrical work eluded her. As a hat check girl in a nightclub, she quit her job and moved back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make enough money as an usherette in the morning, while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
