Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small child when her father, who worked as an carnival barker, died. The mother of the family had to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student in the area. However, she was only in school for two years before going on to pursue an acting career. She faced many obstacles on her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. Then in NYC, she volunteered in a bar as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a regular actor. She earned money by working during the day working as an Usherette. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
