Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small child when her father, who was employed as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to work in jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. She quit the school she was attending after only two years in pursuit of a career as an actor. The path she chose was filled with problems. When she was offered a job in New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to secure opportunities for stage. Then, she worked as the hat checker in a night club before calling the shots and moving back to Boston. There, she made the ends meet by working by working as an usher in the morning, while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She graduated with a diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
