Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father passed away in a tragic way, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as a waitress or cleaner in order for them to survive. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. She left the school she attended just two years later in order to pursue a career as an actor. This was not an easy path to follow. Although she got an interview in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. Following a short period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back home and quit the job she was working in. As an usherette, she worked during the day and then was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first acting position that was permanent. She also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
