Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was young her carnival barker father passed away and left her mother with no choice but to become a cleaner girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. In the midst of only two years in school she left for the acting career. Her path to success turned out be fraught with difficulties: in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills for a magazine about crime However, the stage was not a match for her. Following a short stint as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. There she earned a living working as an usherette during the day, and at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
