Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third child of the family. At the age of five the carnival barker father died, leaving Ruth's mother without a choice other than to become a cleaner woman and waitress to provide for the family. Ruth grew up in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She left school after two years in order to study acting. Her path to success turned out be strewn with obstacles: in New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. When she was employed as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. She made the ends meet by working by working as an usher throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She also studied drama and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
