Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just a young girl, she had to help support the family working both as a cook and server. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district of Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. However, she was only in the school for two years, before leaving to pursue her acting career. The path she chose to take turned out to be strewn with obstacles: In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a magazine about crime, but theatrical work eluded her. The following job she got was the "hat check" girl for a nightclub but she quit and returned to Boston. In Boston, in which she was employed during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time she was an usherette. Also, she studied drama. She ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
