Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third daughter of their family. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father passed away in a tragic way, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become cleaner or waitress to help them remain alive. Ruth grew up in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting career. This was not an easy path to pursue. Although she got an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication however, there were no theatre opportunities that was offered. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave her position. There, she made ends meet by working as an usher throughout the day, and working at night in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
