Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. She was only a young child when her father, who was employed as the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother had to take on jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. In the midst of only two years in school, Ruth left to pursue the acting career. The route she took did not come without challenges. In New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she wanted eluded. In New York, she volunteered at a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting before moving to Boston. In Boston, in which she was employed during the evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and during the day as an usherette. She received a master's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
