Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small toddler when her father who worked as a carnival barker died. The mother of the family had to take on jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She left the school only after two years in order to take on a acting career. The path she chose to take turned out to be fraught with difficulties such as in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills for a magazine about crime, but theatrical work eluded her.
