Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. At the age of five the carnival barker father died, leaving Ruth's mother with no choice but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to support her family. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. Following only two school years she left for the acting career. It was a difficult path to follow. Although she got an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. She made enough money as an usherette during the day while working at night in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. In addition, she was a drama student and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
