Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father, a carnival barker, was killed at the age of a tiny child, forcing her mother to support the family by working as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She attended school in the area. In the midst of only two years in school, Ruth left to pursue an acting profession. It was not without difficulties. After obtaining a position as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine she had a difficult time trying to get jobs on stage. Then, after a time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. In Boston, she worked to make the ends meet by working as an usherette during the day while working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
